AT&T Offers Free Music Phone: Moto EM330

AT&T is now offering the MOTO EM330 with touch-sensitive external screen, MP3 player, high-quality audio performance and as their website says, "all at a price that can't be beat." The phone is free with a rebate and two-year contract. However, avoid having to wait fror the rebate when you use the Wireless and Mobile News' $50 off online only coupon-link.

The music-centric phone allows you to to control your music with ease using touch-sensitive keys that appear only when you need them. Easily play, pause, forward or rewind your songs or choose to listen to new music on your favorite FM radio station with Radio Data System (RDS) technology. Favorite radios stations is as simple as sending a text message to any other FM radio-enabled mobile phone. Songs can be identified with Motorola's SONGID technology then purchased them through AT&T's Music Store.

Skype bids to bridge mobile phone-computer gap

VoIP supplier Skype is calling for network operators, software providers and device makers to work together to help Skype's 405 million users consolidate their communications media on a single mobile device.

The move has the potential to revolutionize enterprise communications.

Skype's call follows research it commissioned that found smartphones and netbooks are not yet the same thing in users' minds.

The survey of 3,000 mobile users in the US, Japan, Spain and the UK showed most do not download applications to mobile devices, and most want more control over how they work with their device.

The study found

. 62% do not yet see their mobile device as an extension of their computer

. Only 23% feel that they have more or the same level of control over their mobile device as they have over their computer

. 70% have never downloaded an application to their mobile device

. 67% want to be able to choose their mobile applications rather than have their carriers choose for them.

Respondents in Japan, the US and the UK felt they had the least control over their mobile devices versus personal computers, and fewer than one in three had downloaded an application to their mobile. Read More>>>

Samsung Omnia HD May Get Windows Mobile 6.5

When Samsung unveiled the OmniaHD last month, it said this upcoming multimedia-oriented smartphone will be based on Symbian S60. A new but unconfirmed report now indicates that there will also be a Windows Mobile version.

Those keeping an eye on the Omnia series might be justified in feeling a touch of whiplash. The original Omnia runs Windows mobile, so there was a bit of surprise when Samsung revealed that the follow-up, the OmniaHD, would run a different operating system. Now there's word that the upcoming version of this phone will also be available with Windows Mobile 6.5.

Samsung Omnia HDIf this report is correct, then this version of the Omnia won't hit the market before the last quarter of this year, as Windows Mobile 6.5 is still in development and won't be available until that time.

The upcoming Omnia model will offer the world's first 700p HUD video recording and decoding on a mobile phone, as well as the world's largest active-matrix OLED screen: 640 by 360 pixels, the 3.7-inch screen.

It will have a strong emphasis on recording and playing video. To handle the recording job, the OmniaHD will have an 8 MPx camera.

This will be a quad-band GSM phone. and it will offer some of the fastest mobile broadband available.

There will be two versions, one with 16 GB of internal storage, a second with 8 GB. In addition, this model will have a microSD slot.

Other features will include a GPS receiver, external stereo speakers, G-sensor, a 1500 mAh battery, and an FM radio.

Apple made available the beta version of its iPhone OS 3.0 and updated software development kit (SDK) to registered developers to begin work on a new and vast array of applications for the popular multifunction mobile phone.

The new iPhone OS 3.0 and software development kit (SDK) includes more than 1,000 APIs (application programming interfaces, In-App Purchases; peer-to-peer connections, a new application interface for accessories, access to iPod music library, and new connections to Google Maps.

Apple made the new version of iPhone OS 3.0 available to developers to begin their preliminary work on new applications, ensuring a full set of new entertainment, informational and productivity applications are available when the OS becomes generally available this summer.

Mobile applications are among the fastest growing segments of the channel and application development community.
